Granny Squeer crochet workshop
This all-day workshop (because you can join and leave at any time) will invite you to learn or remember how to crochet Granny Squares. Rūta, Rasa and Aliona will not only take care of the yarns and tufts, but also teach, advise and help. Together we will create and try to express our identity and inner world through crochet patterns and colours.
Traditionally, granny squares symbolise the knowledge, experience and strength that women have passed on from generation to generation, a silent rebellion against the devaluation of our contribution to history and art. Crochet in general, but especially granny square crochet, can be not only an enjoyable way of self-expression, but also a meditative practice, an opportunity to ground oneself, to pause, to create with one's hands and to enjoy the process, to learn something new for the pleasure of it, rather than for the sake of productivity or result.
The unique squares created during the workshop could be combined into a larger object (e.g. a piece of clothing or a bag, etc.) to be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the Sapfo festival.
Why crocheting?
Working with one's hands, especially crocheting, provides a pleasure that goes beyond the capitalist system of productivity and profit. Engaging in this tactile craft provides an escape that allows us to slow down and find joy in the process rather than the result. This practical work reconnects us with the intrinsic value of creating something beautiful and functional, celebrating human patience, skill and artistry. In this way, crochet can become a form of self-care and personal expression, a peaceful retreat from the demands of a market-driven world.
