This year’s SapfoFest theme – Queer Living // Queer Lives – invites us to explore our everyday lives together: the joys, insights, points of tension and (sometimes imperceptible) forms of resistance that lie within them.
Although the festival programm will examine the theme from a multitude of different perspectives, we wanted to dedicate the opening panel to the voices of the community and real-life stories, which often fall outside the dominant narratives about the LGBTQ* community in the public sphere.

During the Soviet era, very few texts on homosexuality appeared in Lithuania, and all of them were written from a medical or criminological perspective. After independence was restored and homosexuality was decriminalized in 1993, the previously taboo topic of same-sex attraction flooded the media in newly independent Lithuania. Some of these texts featured (real or fictional) descriptions of homosexual relationships, tales of seduction, romantic temptations, and the torments of love, thus offering readers a glimpse into the curiosity-piquing “perverse” underground of homoeroticism.
In this lecture, drawing on archival sources, I will focus on the portrayal of lesbian and bisexual women in the Lithuanian media following decriminalization. Drawing on queer theory, I will seek to uncover the projections of fantasy that shaped these narratives and the visual representations of non-heteronormative women’s experiences. We will discuss why the portrayal of “lesbians” fell into the trap of monstrosity and hypersexualization.

Kadangi „Sapfo Fest“ suburia bendruomenę, kuriai rūpi atvirumas, lygybė ir saugi erdvė būti savimi, festivalio metu kviečiame į mūsų protmūšį.
Jame rasite visko – nuo LGBT+ istorijos, politikos iki popkultūros ir absurdų bei netikėtumų. Norime parodyti, kad net ir rimtomis temomis galima kalbėti lengvai bei įtraukiančiai.
Tai ne egzaminas, o galimybė smagiai praleisti laiką, sužinoti ką nors naujo ir pabūti bendruomenėje, kurioje gera būti.
